What do you get when you take 4x Games champ and elite athlete Mat Fraser, everyone's favorite adlib game from childhood, and smash them together? A delightful game of improvisational fill-in-the-blank we like to call "Mat Libs!" Check out the piece below for our latest round. (Note: Mat's on-the-spot answers are underlined.)
New Year, New You
This year, my New Year's resolution is to have an electronics curfew. I'm trying to be more consistent with shutting off my devices each night.
The goal I tend to struggle the most with is getting enough sleep. See my last answer. It's just too easy to binge good content!
The thing I'm most excited about for the new year is the consistency Sammy and I are planning. We've been splitting our time between Vermont and Tennessee, but we should just have one home base in 2020.
My advice to people with resolutions to get in shape is to take small steps! Make small changes one at a time, and build small habits to be successful.
On New Year's Eve, I'll be asleep by 10 pm!
Training & Nutrition
If I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be brisket.
I always get hangry. I'm like a toddler. When I'm hungry or tired, I can't keep my composure.
My favorite meal of the day is whatever food I'm binging on at 9 pm. I love the late-night snacks.
My favorite cheat meal right now is cheesecake. I could easily through the better portion of one. No single favorite flavor. I don't discriminate; every cheesecake is up to eat.
I crave savory foods more often, especially anything baked with cream cheese.
What I love most about the Games is that it tests everything.
What I love most about training is that it's OK to fail. There is actually benefit to failure. You're gonna learn something about yourself when you fail.
The movement that’s frustrating the most right now is handstand walks.
I listen to rap or country music at the gym.
The song I am the most motivated by right now is called Band Plays On, by Jellyroll. (True story.)
My favorite motivational quote right now is: don't accept criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from.
I recently read Atomic Habits, a book about an easy and proven way to build good habits and bad ones.
The thing about me that would surprise people the most is that I got a double major, double minor in college, and I was on the Dean's List.
I couldn’t live without Sammy.
One new hobby I want to try is playing the harmonica. (Also, puzzles. I could get into puzzles. I did my first puzzle this last Thanksgiving—I think it was around 500 or 750 pieces—but I could see myself doing more of those.)
I would love to visit Montana.
One of my favorite places in the world is Monopoli, Italy. Good food, good people, and it's gorgeous.
To me, a perfect night out includes staying in! Otherwise, go-karting. That's one of the most fun things I've done in a long time.
The perfect night in includes good snacks, a binge-worthy TV show, and the right show partner.
The show I'm binging right now is called Power. I think we're watching it on Hulu. It's about gangsters, criminals, and all the good stuff!
The emoji that fits me best is the one where the smiley face is showing all his teeth—like he just screwed up and he knows it. I feel I'm making that face myself most of the time! 😬
